Stoned Children = Funny

Okaaay, here we go again...first of all: Lykke Li was an excellent, high energy party filled with dance parties and shots of jager and sing alongs, covers of Kings of Leon and Tribe Called Quest, oh...and legions of beautiful girls. I'm pretty sure every hip, well dressed, pretty girl in Toronto was at the Phoenix Concert Theatre last Friday. In conclusion, everyone involved did a fantastic job.

Next, the movie of the last week was the film adaptation of everyones' favorite fake newpaper, The Onion.

The is a must see for pot heads and media skeptics alike. I, being both, feel like I got the best of both worlds. I pretty much laughed through the whole thing, with the exception of a couple of scenes that are pretty much just plain wrong. Honorable mention goes to "Armed Gunman", and look forward to multiple "celebrity" cameos including Sir Steven Seagal.

Moving right along, this Thursday, February 12th marks the return of Detroit's own Von Bondies to Call the Office supporting the new album "Love, Hate, and Then There's You." It's like 8 bucks, and Young Rival from Toronto are opening, and they are always awesome. So there, you're in.

One of the highlights of the Lykke Li show for a drunk like myself was at the end when the dj graced us with Animal Collective's new single "My Girls", which is, duh, very excellent. Did anybody else know that their new album Merriweather Post Pavillion is really hard to find in stores because the warehouses keep selling out? That must mean it's great. Well, it is. Their coming to the Sound Academy in Toronto on May 16th. And it's gonna sell out, so you should watch the video for My Girls and enjoy it and then come to the show with us.

And in closing, if you haven't seen this, you probably should. It begs the question from all of us, is it funny seeing children high on drugs? You be the judge. But yes, it's funny.

Thanks Sandra Bullock, for being a quitter.

This Friday, Feb 6, 2008. Lykke Li at Phoenix Concert Theatre in Toronto, ON. She makes some awesome songs, like Little Bit and Dance Dance Dance. Also, her take on Kings of Leon's "Knocked Up" is pretty fantastic. Therefore, lets all go watch and listen. Hopefully I will see you there. Check out some more!

Last Saturday, Jan 31, 2008. Emma Lee and Revival Dear kicked the front room at London Music Club's ass. The created a super enjoyable and relaxing fun atmosphere filled with rad folkish fun, if you missed them, which you more than likely did, check them out next time! When is next time?
Emma Lee
Revival Dear

Here is a list of upcoming shows that I shall be attending...let me know if you wanna join me...the more the merrier as always!

Feb 6. Lykke Li at Phoenix Concert Theatre in Toronto
Feb 7. The Waking Eyes and The Arkells at Call the Office in London
Feb 12. The Von Bondies and Young Rival at Call the Office in London
Feb 20. The Hylozoists at The Out Back Shack (Fanshawe College) in London
Feb 21. Blitzen Trapper at The Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto
Feb 27. Shaun and Jackie of One Way Trip at the Front Room of London Music Club, in London

I will post the shows for the months following February, but I don't want to overwhelm anybody (or type html all day).

I am officially recommending the movie Prime, starring Uma Thurman and Meryl Streep. Uma Thurman can do no wrong in my opinion, but this is well worth checking out. Playing a suprising supporting role in this film is the soundtrack, and I think you'll know what I mean from the opening credits. Romantic comedy it may be, I'm sticking to my guns on this one.

Also, I just read that Sandra Bullock was original the female lead in this, but wanted to many changes on the script that the director wouldn't budge on. So she left. I've never been so thankful that Sandra Bullock is a stubborn quitter.

First Things First

After two or so years collecting dust, after it took a year to complete, and another several months to master, Listen to Learn is finally available for free download. It is probably about 50 tracks and hundreds of samples mixed together from vinyl, by yours truly. It is filled with songs and exclusives remixes featuring Del, Lifesavas, Aceyalone, Erykah Badu, Common, Mos Def, Moka Only, Pharcyde, The Roots, KRS One, Atmosphere, Lupe Fiasco, Dead Prez and so many more. I hope you all enjoy it.

I have another mix on the way, again all vinyl, but this time it will be dance music. Featuring the usual suspects like Justice, Hot Chip, Junior Boys, Brazilian Girls, Shout Out Out Out Out, Gui Boratto and Booka Shade. It's gonna be fun, you can dance or exercise to it, or both.

New Hip Hop Madness

First things first, Of Mexican Descent member Xololanxinxo has released a new album online. He claims that he will be posting new albums for free download bi-annually. This is exciting, as Xolo albums are harder to come across than most of us might prefer. Follow this link to download it.

Next, Myka Nyne, of Freestyle Fellowship and Haiku D'e Tat fame his released the LP "1969" to celebrate his 40th birthday. I highly recommend this album, all beats by factor, with guest raps from Busdriver, Awol One and Aceyalone. Listen to some of it here.

The other half of Of Mexican Descent, 2mex, has finally released his full length collaboration with Ikey Owens of the Mars Volta, known as Look Daggers. I haven't listened to it yet, but here is a remix of the song "That Look" which features Ryland Steen of Reel Big Fish and Jessica Dobson who plays guitar with Beck. Download it here.

Also, anyone in London should come check out Revival Dear at London Music Club on Saturday, January 31, 2008. It's only 6 dollars. Come on now.

Back to School Money Grabs and New Neko Case MP3 for A Good Cause

Back to school. A whole new semester of trying to push myself to go to classes, smoke less pot and go to fewer concerts.

Call me crazy but balancing work and school with concerts and pot doesn't seem entirely unreasonable. More or less the name of the game is figuring out what exactly I should be doing with myself NEXT year. This year is just a means to an end.

2009 concert time begins this evening with the outrageous money grab known as Dirty Disko at UP! on Carling starring Toronto's own Mstrkrft. Not that I'm not pumped for it, I feel like it is completely ridiculous to charge 40 dollars for a dj set. Unless of course the set is brought to us by Jesus, or someone of comparable turntable wizardy. (Of course, I'm just assuming Jesus would be able to throw down).

Justice wasn't even 40 bucks, and hating I am not, Justice was not worth however much it was. But this is the direction that rich electro hipsters are willing to go, and who am I if not one to conform.

For the record, a DJ set should resemble something like the magnificent show put on by Ill Insanity and Roc Raida at the Knitting Factory (R.I.P.) in NYC this summer. Which, might I add...was free.

On an unrelated tip, the mega talented, wicked wonderful Neko Case and her always intriguing record label ANTI Records have vowed to donate 5 dollars for each blog to post her new single, "People Got A Lotta Nerve" to The Best Friends Animal Society. Which is one of Americas' foremost animal rescue organizations.

Neko Case-People Got A Lotta Nerve

So, download it, it's free, it's awesome, and it's for a great cause. Also, if you're on facebook or iLike (or both), make sure you Ilike Neko Case because for each of those, one dollar will be donated to this great cause on your behalf.

Neko Case's new album Middle Cyclone will be out March 3rd. Mark your calenders.

Internet video gem installment

Back to work. The holidays were great times as always.

I'm brain dead but here is a video of something that should happen more often. It's Lykke Li and Bon Iver together, and it's fun.
